It’s Constitution Day! While the current home of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence is the @usnatarchives, both documents were once housed here at the Library of Congress. Right now, for the first time ever, the National Archives has the full U.S. Constitution, including all 27 amendments, displayed in its Rotunda. The display will remain open through Wednesday, Oct. 1. Head to visit.archives.gov to learn more! #constitutionday | The Library of Congress

Welcome to the Library of Congress accelerated aging lab! Kelsey Beeghly, 2023-2024 Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow, and Andrew Davis, chemist in the Preservation and Research Testing Division, demonstrate how the Library uses aging experiments with test samples to speed up and investigate the naturally-occurring reactions which cause materials to break down over time. This kind of testing is practical, allowing Library staff to make preservation relevant decisions without waiting

ICYMI: There’s a fascinating new exhibition here at the Library of Congress that examines the parallel lives of George Washington and King George III of Britain. They never met in person. They never even wrote to each other, despite both men being prolific writers. And for more than 200 years, their archives — including diaries, letters, speeches, charts and drawings — were separated by an ocean. Now, for the first time, these two collections have come together in one place. Plan your trip to se

This year marks 25 years of the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, which was celebrated in the PBS “Salute to Service” broadcast last month. The Veterans History Project collects, preserves and makes accessible the firsthand recollections of U.S. military veterans who served from World War I through more recent conflicts and peacekeeping missions, so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand what they saw, did and felt during their service. Something you may not know about the Library of Congress: The Preservation and Testing Division has labs where staff research how to best support the preservation, interpretation and research of manuscripts, books and other Library materials. They study paper, inks, adhesives, sound recordings, storage conditions, and much, much more! Scientists in the Library's Preservation Research and Testing Division recently worked to analyze the colorants in this beautiful entomology book from 1705. Technical studies like this one help provide scholars with insights into where, when and how items in the Library's collection were made. This book is digitized, so you can see it in its entirety on the Library's website. Just search "Metamorphosis insectorum" on loc.gov. | The Library of Congress

Absolutely nobody wants Library of Congress collections getting WET. 🫣 However, it does happen from time to time, and that’s why the Preservation Emergency Response Team (PERT) exists. They are on-call to help mitigate damage when, for different reasons, collections encounter water. Recently, a training was held for the PERT members so they could get more comfortable handling large, wet paper items, such as maps and posters. (No Library collection items were damaged in the making of this video!

We love moments like this at the Library. Recently, Whoopi Goldberg visited to discuss her new autobiography with the Librarian of Congress. During a tour of the Library collections beforehand, she got a chance to see the unpublished draft of a screenplay written for her and Bette Midler in the Library’s collection of Neil Simon Papers. ❤️ To learn more about Whoopi’s visit and the Neil Simon Papers, visit blogs.loc.gov/music. | The Library of Congress

The archival collections of the Library include the largest body of early indigenous American music recordings in the U.S.: about 10,000 wax cylinders of songs and stories. Many of them are recordings made by Omaha ethnographer Francis La Flesche (pictured). La Flesche was the first professional Native American ethnologist and a member of the Omaha Nation. His recordings and others like them are used by both native and non-native researchers. Their greatest value lies in the cultures and languag
